I’ve been wanting, for a while, to create a space to reflect on academia as a researcher/scholar and offer insights into the problems and difficulties we are facing as a field and profession. Through a series of essays, I hope to illuminate issues and topics the research community currently contends while facing the adverse environment of academia.
The name, Rogue Scholar, came from a misconception on my part of the Rhodes Scholarship program. I had heard, wrongly, the Rhode Scholars name on TV and other media, where these prestigious albeit unorthodox individuals were pushing the boundary of science and research in unconventional ways for the greater good. Though not always accepted for what they did, ultimately they acted in ways that they believed would benefit society, regardless of whether it stirred controversy, upended precedent, or was detrimental to themselves. Much like a benevolent rogue, these scholars were brave in the face of adversity.
Through this misconception, I had always aspired to be a Rogue Scholar, someone who did not accept the status quo and was willing to question what we consider the norm. Through writing and other mediums, the goal of this body of work will be to have a conversation on issues the field faces and actions we should take to bring light to the shared struggles and experiences we contend with on our pursuit of Truth.
The mission of Rogue Scholar is to start a conversation about the convention and norms of academia, through eyes and experiences of those who lived it.
These opinions and experiences are my own.
